Empowering mentors and student teachers: Coaching, CPD and reflective practice in action
In my blog post for SSAT, I share insights from my Lead Practitioner project, where I explored how structured coaching, purposeful CPD, and reflective practice can strengthen mentoring relationships and support PGCE student teachers.
Drawing on educational research and real-life case studies, I reflect on the use of strategies such as video reflections, the TGROW coaching model, and a four-stage reflection framework to empower both mentors and trainees. These approaches not only supported trainee progress and lesson planning but also helped mentors grow in confidence, clarity, and professional identity.
Rooted in national teaching standards, this work demonstrates the powerful and lasting impact of investing in meaningful mentor development across school communities.
